A Letter of Application.

You should use:

  1. Specific greetings, endings:
  2. e.g. Dear Mr. Brown...

    ... Yours sincerely

    Dear Sir/Madam…

    .... Yours faithfully

  3. Advanced language, vocabulary, set phrases.
  4. Use of the passive.
  5. Formal linkers:
  6. e.g. for this reason, therefore, moreover, however, although

  7. Full forms.

 

You shouldn’t use:

  1. A personal, chatty style.
  2. Everyday language.
  3. Short forms.
  4. Lots of phrasal verbs, idioms.

 

You should write:

  1. Where you saw the advert.
  2. Why you are interested in the job.
  3. Your exams and qualifications.
  4. What you do / what you are studying.
  5. Previous work experience.
  6. Your age.
  7. Your positive qualities.
  8. Languages you speak.
  9. When you are available for an interview.
  10. When you can start work.

Set phrases and expressions you should write in your letter of application:

- I am writing to apply for the position of…

- I am considering a career of a …

- I have 2 years’ experience …

- I don’t have any experience, but….

- I have a good knowledge of …

- I have always been interested in…

- I haven’t worked … before, however I feel that I possess all the necessary skills to be able to do a good job.

- I would like to gain some experience…

- I am willing to work hard to achieve my goal.

- I would be available for an interview…

- I have enclosed a copy of my CV.

- I look forward to hearing from you.

- I can be contacted on the following number…

- I am free to start work…
